“Luke? Could you come to my room for a second?” Luke’s brother Owen calls over sweetly.
Why wouldn’t he? Owen was his twin, his best friend. Luke would never dream of Owen leaving him. Never in his worst dreams has he imagined them being apart for more than 24 hours, much less on different sides.
Luke placed his last textbook into his trunk and dashed over to Owen’s room next door. His room is a mess - he hasn’t even packed! “Owen, why haven’t you packed yet? We start school -“
“Luke, you’re the only one who will understand. That’s why I decided to tell you first,” Owen interrupts. He continues, “I’m not going back to school this year.”
“Why?” Luke question Owen. “O, I thought we swore that we would always be together. You know what happens if you break your oath right?”
“Yes, I know. But that’s the problem. It’s where our loyalties lie.” Owen explains.
“What are you talking about? We both know our loyalties lie with Professor John and the Academy. We both will protect the Academy with our life.” Luke screams.
Owen puts a finger to his lip and shushes his twin. “Luke Buckley, you must understand. Professor John promised me something. But he didn’t deliver it. My master has promised me the same thing. And I know he will deliver it. My master honors his word.”
“Owen Buckley, if this is how you want it so be it. I hope you will come to your senses soon before anything gets worse.” Luke manage, tears forming out of his eyes.
“Lukey, just remember, if you see me again, don’t approach me. I won’t be the same person anymore. I won’t give you any mercy.” His ex-best friend warns, before grabbing his suitcase. He turns on his heel and walks out of the Buckley house matter-of-factly.
Luke sits on his twin’s bed and cries. He sits there for eternity, staring at his wall, covered with posters of potion recipes, crying. He doesn’t seem to notice the girl sitting behind him until she quietly asks him, “Luke, what’s wrong?
